Layar is used to identify objects located around the user with the help of built-in technologies like GPS, the accelerometer and the digital compass. With Layar, users can access information about the objects they are searching simply by looking through the camera.
Currently, Layar is available for the iPhone and Android smartphone platforms. It should also become available for Blackberry and Symbian systems in the near future.
Concept Factory Turkey has recently developed a new Layar application to add a touch of augmented reality to Turkey's first automobile portal, Oto24.
What does the application do?
When the Oto24 Layar application is launched, it displays information on cars for sale near the user's current location. The user can filter this information by brand, distance from current location, price and mileage. The filtered results are shown in the default augmented reality view relative to the users position, giving direction and distance to the dealerships. The user can bring up detailed information on a single vehicle by tapping the displayed icon. This allows the user to call the dealer directly or visit the advertisement on the Oto24 website. As an alternative to the augmented reality view, both a list view of the filtered search results and a classic map view with a route planner are available in the application.
